Nov 27, 2020     Starting on the Horizontal Stabilizer - (4 hours)       Category: Empennage
Getting started on the H stab today. Started by collecting the parts and cleaning up the two spar stiffeners HS609 on the Scotchbrite wheel. Spent about an hour polishing and shaping these two pieces, took longer than I would have expected but they are pretty rough out of the box so you need to spend the time to clean them up. With that done, cleco'd each one into place on the two parts of the rear stab spar. The fit was good so no adjustments needs. With clecos in place, drilled all holes to #30 size which took a while. Final part was to enlarge a certain set of holes to #21 which allows a rib to be attached.

Once that was completed I located the hinge brackets and cleco'd them to the proper locations on the rear spar. These hinges are already painted (maybe powder coated) and would not take a copper cleco very well. I found that only certain clecos in my collection would fit through these holes, guessing due to the paint or powder coating. With those in place, match drilled all of their attachment holes.

So lots of drilling and placing/removing clecos today. The rear spar is nearly 8' in length so it's a bit unwieldy to work with. Note the special mount that I build to work on it.
